FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – In a public/private partnership, Allen County Commissioners, Three Rivers Horse Trails and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources announced the awarding of a grant for the construction of trailhead and horse trails in southeast Allen. County in the 5400 block of Paulding Road.
Indiana Department of Natural Resources grant in the amount of $250,000 with $62,500 in matching funds from Allen County will allow construction of a 3-acre trail with truck parking and horse trailers as well as convenience facilities. The site will also include handicap accessible mounts and trails suitable for therapeutic riding.
The commissioners released the following:
Approximately five miles of equestrian trails will be created around agricultural fields and through wooded areas on the site, covering approximately 200 acres in total, as well as equestrian obstacles for the enjoyment of riders and the challenge of their horses. Three Rivers Horse Trails will host events and activities and maintain the trailhead and trails when completed.
The construction schedule is planned as follows:
Fall 2022 – bidding process Spring 2023 – start of construction Summer/Fall 2023 – open to the public
Three Rivers Horse Trails was organized in the spring of 2019 with the mission statement: Three Rivers Horse Trails is dedicated to the development and economic impact of a unique resource through which the public can enjoy a horseback journey by safe for recreation, connectivity and quality of life across northeast Indiana.
Allen County Indiana is home to one of Indiana’s largest horse populations. Lynn Sroufe, President of Three Rivers Horse Trails, says, “After 3 years of hard work, we are thrilled to be able to bring our vision for horse trails to life in Allen County.
