FORT WAYNE, Ind. (ADAMS) – Fort Wayne’s long battle with its former trash company is finally over.
On Tuesday, the city council chose GFL Environmental as the city’s new waste hauler.
GFL replaces Red River Waste Solutions, which Fort Wayne leaders say has failed to properly pick up garbage in the city for years.
Fort Wayne wanted to get away from Red River so badly that the city paid the company nearly $2 million to terminate its contract.
The new deal with GFL is worth $11 million and runs through 2030.
On Tuesday evening, the City released the following:
GFL Environmental USA has received the necessary approvals to become the City of Fort Wayne’s waste and recycling hauler effective July 1.
Tonight City Council unanimously approved a contract between the City of Fort Wayne and GFL. Earlier today, the City of Fort Wayne Public Works Board approved the same contract.
GFL is the fourth largest diversified environmental services company in North America with facilities across Canada and in more than half of the US states. GFL has experience in Fort Wayne operating a transfer station here since 2020, and they have a landfill in Claypool, Ind.
The tender specifications and the new contract contain elements that are designed to help ensure improved services in the future and a contractor with the necessary experience and past successes to meet the City’s needs.
“We look forward to GFL being our newest partner as we work every day to provide the best possible solid waste collection services for the 83,400 households we serve,” said Mayor Tom Henry. “I am encouraged that my administration, City Council, Solid Waste Advisory Board and GFL have come together in a collaborative way. I am convinced that we will have a positive and prosperous future to meet the needs of the community.
Highlights of what solid waste customers can expect starting July 1:
