Modern rock house built on the side of a huge boulder

Inspired by the rock tombs of Mada’in Saleh in Saudi Arabia, architectural designer Amey Kandalgaonkar designed a modern house encased in the side of a huge boulder. Assembling like a Chinese puzzle box, the overall shape slowly reveals itself as Kandalgaonkar gives an aerial view of the site. It is only from the sky that the minimalist facade reveals a much more complex construction behind the megalithic rock.

Kandalgoankar, who is a master at creating 3D conceptual renderings, spent a lot of time working on the shape and shape of the rock before designing the house. His House inside a rock is full of surprises, especially by the way it cuts through natural material rather than building it.

“Given the visual complexity of the rocks at Mada’in Saleh, it was imperative to use simple plans and cubes in order to achieve visual balance,” explains the Shanghai-based architect. “I started by creating the rock in 3D software, which in itself was a sculpting process. Later, when inserting the house into this rock, I tried to minimize its visual impact as much as possible from eye level and only when observed from a bird’s eye view the real extent of the intervention is revealed.

By juxtaposing the rough texture of rock with the smooth surface of concrete, Kandalgoankar achieves a complex visual contrast where the old and the new are complementary. While it’s hard to imagine something like this ever materializing in the real world, these incredible architectural concepts remind us of the art behind architecture.
