Sparkling classical and rock music: Doc Snow releases music that touches the hearts and minds of audiences.

This music consortium is best known for being experimental with a sophisticated edge of power.

Doc Snow is an up-and-coming artist whose original creations dance beyond the ordinary boundaries that the music industry tries to maintain. The tunes from his new album, damage, bring together rock, classic, folk, jazz and even avant-garde sounds in a breathtaking synthesis. Call it “experimental” if you must, but Doc’s true love for each genre shines through.

For all the experimental verve in the music, it’s the eclectic star’s lyrics that give us the struggles of real people. Inspired by fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen, Doc explores the challenges and triumphs of people’s lives. The lovely mid-tempo ballad “October the 20th” tells an old family story of the first women to vote in small-town Ontario; “The Wind Blows Free” examines the personal roots of public violence with compassion, but without approval; and the chilling “Aleatoric Blues” portrays a stressed worker dealing with climate change in his own backyard. It is this quality that touches the soul of listeners, keeping them coming back for more.

Doc even puts a mind-blowing spin on Dylan with another standout track, “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 / Alle Menschen” – an electronic and choral style fantasia blending classic proto-alt-rock with a Lutheran choral tune once harmonized by JS Bach. It’s the pure and utterly startling musical mastery that Doc is becoming known for. Except for a few guests – (Karen Peter’s viola on “October the 20th” and co-writer Deb Matherly’s backing vocals on the country “Ticked Right Off”) damage is a do-it-yourself project from start to finish, featuring Doc horn, vocals and multi-track guitars in addition to electronic styles for sometimes lush, sometimes edgy full band arrangements.

ON

Doc Snow describes himself as the “ultimate outsider within” – an individual who bravely and diligently explored his music. He made a name for himself with his first album, Carolina Maze, in September 2020. He says his style is “the product of a lifetime of bands, concerts, day jobs, inspirations, choirs, schools, musical heroes, studios and students, heartaches, orchestras, technology and touring” – to which we would add “talent”. Now his second album damage builds on that, offering a genre-transcending collection – it’s music made on its own terms alone!
