The American Idol finalist from Illinois has a famous classic rock dad

She is a chip from the old block. Illinois native Leah Marlene was chosen as one of the 3 finalists for the American Idol Finale. She happens to have some classic rock DNA in her family as her father is a famous guitarist in a band that rose to fame in the 1980s.

Leah Marlene, who lives in Normal, Illinois, reached the American Idol final. As she mentions on her website, she is the daughter of Honeymoon Suite guitarist Derry Grehan. Here is an excerpt from his bio:

Leah grew up in a house full of music and guitars as her father, Derry Grehan, is a songwriter and lead guitarist for Canadian band Honeymoon Suite. He taught her to play guitar and piano and passed on to her his passion for songwriting.

Here’s an interview Leah did with Chicago’s ABC 7.

Derry was considered one of the most prolific guitarists in the mid-1980s, as his band Honeymoon Suite had big hits with “New Girl Now” and “Love Changes Everything”, among others.

Derry’s game was so respected that it was featured in a Pepsi commercial during the Super Bowl in the 80s that you may recall.

As Variety mentions, Leah Marlene will find out if she’s this year’s American Idol when the finale airs this Sunday night, May 22.
